Two Pakistanis reported killed in Iraq, one missing

Islamabad, May 29 (DPA) Even as Pakistan was awaiting information Monday about one of its citizens who reportedly went missing last week in Iraq, the media reported that two others had been killed in a militant attack in Baghdad.

News reports gave only one name, Shafiq, for the missing man who was working as a driver when he was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen while he was travelling in a convoy.

'We are trying to ascertain the authenticity of the news,' Islamabad's Foreign Office spokesman Sohail Mehmood said.

The Pakistani government was in touch with its missions in Kuwait and Jordan to attain details of the suspected abduction, Mehmood said without confirming the reports.

The spokesman, however, said he had no knowledge about the killings of two other Pakistani drivers as reported by private television channel Geo.

Nasir Iqbal and Mohammad Munir, also working as drivers, were reportedly killed Thursday during an attack on an American military base in Baghdad.

According to Geo, their bodies were flown to neighbouring Kuwait Monday and will be sent to Pakistan Tuesday.

Despite security warnings by the Pakistani government, an unknown number of Pakistanis remain in Iraq, employed at higher wages for operating in the war zone.
