Kathmandu, May 29 (IANS) Seven Nepali soldiers, taking part in United Nations peacekeeping operations in Congo, were taken hostage and another was killed by rebels Sunday, the Nepal Army said Monday.
Soldiers of the Nepal Army's Bharabi Dal battalion, stationed in the African republic as part of the UN Peacekeeping Force, were engaged in a cordon and search operation when they were attacked by Congolese rebel militia, the army said.
While a Nepali soldier died and three others were injured, the rebels took seven prisoners captive. The army did not immediately disclose the names of the soldiers.
Efforts were on at the UN to obtain the release of the soldiers, the army said.
Last year, a senior Nepali official, Major Kabindra Jung Thapa, was killed in Congo while serving in the UN Mission.
The UN office here said Monday that Major Thapa and three other Nepali soldiers who died last year while 'serving the cause of peace' would be awarded the Dag Hammarskjold Medal given posthumously to military, police and civilian personnel who lost their lives serving in the UN peacekeeping operations.
The three Nepalis to be honoured posthumously at a special ceremony in the UN headquarters in New York May 31 are Warrant Officer Rishi Ram, who died in Burundi, Corporal Mohan Shingh Ga Ma, who died in Haiti, and Sepoy Shyam Bahadur Katuwal, who too died in Haiti.
Nepal is the fifth largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping operations with 3,523 peacekeepers serving in 12 missions.
The news of the casualties comes even as the army suffered losses at home when four soldiers died in an explosion in eastern Nepal.
The men were engaged in cleaning operations at the army base camp in Hatubagdi in Bhojpur district Monday afternoon when a hidden bomb or mine went off, killing all four.
This is the second instance of an explosion occurring at an army post this year. Army camps are often fortified against Maoist attacks by planting mines around the compound but the precaution sometimes boomerangs, killing soldiers as well as civilians.
