X-Men: The Last Stand knocked The Da Vinci Code off the top of the US box office this weekend, grossing $107 million in the highest ever Memorial Day opening.
The action film starring Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn as superhero mutants grossed an average $28,997 per cinema.
It was the fourth-largest ever opening in US cinematic history, beaten only by Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith, Shrek 2 and Spider Man.
And its massive initial three-day gross, measured between Friday and Sunday, dwarfed the $77 million taken by The Da Vinci Code last week to become the highest opener of the year so far.
In addition to US sales, total international sales reached $302 million, easily recouping the $165 million the film cost to make.
One of the biggest single costs of the film was the construction of a 2,500 foot replica of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The third X-Men film, which follows from 2003's X2 and the original X-Men film of 2000, tells the story of divisions occurring between the X-Men when a cure is found which treats mutations.
It also stars Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto, Xavier's former ally.
