MIC president names his candidates for party posts

Kuala Lumpur, May 30 (IANS) Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) president Samy Vellu has named his list of candidates for the party's 23-seat Central Working Committee (CWC) elections scheduled to be held on June 24.

MIC is the leading political party representing the Indian community in Malaysia. Ethnic Indians comprise seven percent of the country's population of over 24 million.

According to a report in the Star newspaper, although the party has 19 members in state assemblies and nine MPs, none of the state representatives figure in Vellu's list for deputy or vice-president.

Ever since he took over the reins of the party, Vellu has made it a tradition of sorts to name his preferred list of candidates in party elections. The elections, however, are open to everyone in the party.

This time Vellu has named current vice president G. Palanivel, the country's deputy minister for women, family and community development, as his preferred candidate for the post of the party's deputy president. Party secretary general S. Sothinathan and incumbents S. Veerasingam and K.S. Nijhar have been named for the posts of the three vice presidents.

Vellu's candidates are unlikely to get a cakewalk with all of them facing competition. Palanivel is likely to face current deputy president S. Subramaniam, while the three candidates for the vice presidents' posts, too, are faced with stiff competition from other candidates.

The Palanivel-Subramaniam contest will draw the biggest attention given the strained relationship between Vellu and Subramaniam. A controversy has already been sparked off after an SMS poll was started to gauge the popularity between the two.

The Star report quoted Vellu as saying that the team he had named, with most of the incumbents retained, would be able to work with the party leadership.

'There is a mixture of state executive councillors, MPs, senators and state assemblymen in the CWC,' he was quoted as saying. He said 21 of the current batch of elected CWC members would be retained.

Vellu is expected to introduce his team members during his campaign trail through all the states in the peninsula, which starts next week.
