Islamabad, May 30 (DPA) A relentless heat wave sweeping across central and southern Pakistan has reportedly claimed at least 12 lives since Monday morning, with the sizzling weather likely to persist in coming days, officials said Tuesday.
Deaths were reported in the southern cities of Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Jhang districts where temperatures has hovered between 40 and 46 degrees Celsius for the past several days.
The mercury hit 50 degrees Celsius in southern Nawabshah and Jacobabad cities Monday, with frequent power cuts multiplying people's miseries.
Jacobabad also experienced the hottest day of sweltering summer on May 27 with mercury touching 51 degree Celsius, according to Shehzad Sultan of the local meteorological department.
The latest fatalities from the scorching heat have taken the death toll in May to at least 96.
In 2003, a heat wave killed more than 230 Pakistanis.
