Kuwait City, May 30 (IANS) Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami said internal despotism and external colonialism have been two major factors leading to the backwardness of Islamic countries.
He made the comment Monday night in an address titled, 'Challenges Facing the Islamic World: Ways to Promote Islamic Movement' at the Arabic Poetry Library here, in the presence of Kuwaiti thinkers and authors, the IRNA news agency reported.
Khatami, who is also the Head of the International Centre for Dialogue among Cultures and Civilisations added, 'Among the challenges with which the Islamic World is entangled today, are the need to accept the bitter realities of the day; mislocation of resources, yielding to plots hatched by the West against us in a bid to disturb the balance of power in Islamic World; and growth of extremist tendencies.'
According to him, efforts should be made at changing the despotic regimes and replacing them with democratic political systems. For this, he believed, that Islamic societies must be convinced to reject any type of foreign interference, as well as the interference of puppet regimes.
Khatami said: 'This would strengthen the Islamic world scientifically, and rid it of despotism and neo-colonialism.'
The Iranian leader arrived in Kuwait Sunday on a four-day visit and is scheduled to meet Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber and a number of other Kuwaiti officials. He will be delivering a lecture at the Islamic Bank Conference, and speak to the Iranians residing in Kuwait.
