Chinese boy has third arm removed

A two-month-old Chinese boy has had a third arm successfully removed in an operation, doctors in Shanghai have said.

The operation to remove the boy's second left arm went well, Dr Chen Bochang, head of Shanghai Children's Medical Centre's orthopedics department, said.

Jie-Jie was unable to use either arm fully and the decision was taken to remove one of them. He will now receive therapy in an effort to improve the functionality of his remaining arm.

'The surgery was quite successful,' Dr Chen told the Associated Press after the surgery, which took three hours.

'Now we're just waiting for the patient to wake up.'

Jie-Jie's third arm was positioned around the front of his body, while his right arm appeared to be normal.

Doctors said that the defect was extremely rare but decided that surgery was the best option for the infant, with suggestions that he could have kidney and spine problems later in life.

The surgeons who carried out the operation have previously been involved in separating twins who have been joined at birth
