Australian charity helps to send Indo-Fijian's body home

Suva (Fiji), June 16 (IANS) A charity organisation in Australia has come forward to help repatriate the body of an Indian origin woman, who was found murdered in Melbourne last week, to her home in Fiji.

According to reports here, the Melbourne-based Hindu Foundation has raised $6,500 for the transportation of Nileshni Lata Singh's body to her home in Nasinu, Fiji.

The body of Singh, an Indo-Fijian, was found in a drain near her home in Lynbroook area of Melbourne on June 10, hours after her family in Fiji celebrated her 19th birthday.

The body was seen lying in the middle of the road by a passer-by. The woman's husband, Amitesh Bali Jagroop, 23, has been charged for the murder.

Nileshni had married Jagroop, with whom she had a long-time affair, and migrated to Australia a few months ago.

After being informed about the tragedy, the family faced difficulties in getting her body back to Fiji.

According to a report in fijilive.com, when Hindu Foundation executive director Ajay Awasti came to know of the murder and the family's difficulties, he contacted several cultural and religious organisations in Victoria.

'We have raised enough money and we hope to be able to send her body home by the weekend,' the report quoted him as saying.

Earlier, the Australian high commission in Fiji had also reportedly promised help to the family in repatriating the body to Fiji.
