Kaiserslautern, June 27 (DPA) Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was named FIFA's man of the match in the encounter that saw Australia knocked out of the World Cup Monday.
The Juventus keeper kept a clean sheet despite his side being down to ten men for most of the second half and under considerable pressure.
'He made three great saves when his team were down to ten men,' said FIFA Technical Study Group member Alvin Corneal.
'Also, he's got great control of the Italy defence, so for ten-man Italy his support was very important because he directed the defence, which in turn helped to organise the entire team,' Corneal added.
