Washington, June 28 (IANS) The India-US nuclear deal cleared its first hurdle with the International Committee of the House of Representatives approving a 'landmark' supporting bill to give New Delhi access to nuclear know-how after thirty years.
Drafted by the Republican Chairman Henry Hyde of Illinois and Tom Lantos of California, the leading Democrat, an altogether new bill authorising the President to exempt India from US Atomic Energy Act restrictions was passed Tuesday by an overwhelming 37-5 margin after a marathon four-hour meeting.
The Senate Foreign Relations committee is expected to follow suit by voting on a similar bill prepared by Republican Chairman Richard Lugar of Indiana and Democrat Joseph Biden of Delaware Thursday, a day later than earlier scheduled.
If the two versions differ substantially in the operational part, they would have to be reconciled for the deal to get Congressional approval.
