Indian women to play hockey series in South Africa

Johannesburg, June 28 (IANS) The India women's hockey team will play a four-match Test series against South Africa next month, ahead of the World Cup in September-October.

The matches will be played July 25, 26, 28 and 29 in Stellenbosch, according to the South Africa Press Association (SAPA).

The World Cup will be played in Madrid Sep 27-Oct 8.

Indian team's coach M.K. Kaushik said he was looking forward to the Test series.

'South Africa are known to be one of the most competitive teams in world hockey and with the two teams being ranked so close together in the world rankings, we can expect an exciting and well balanced series,' he said.

India, reigning Asian champions and silver medallists at the March Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, are ranked 13th while South Africa is 11th on the list.

South African coach Jenny King is also excited at the prospect of the series.

'We look forward to playing the Commonwealth Games silver medallists in our own backyard. The South African public will be treated to some highly-skilled, counter-attack hockey which should lead to some exciting encounters throughout the week,' she said.

The series will be the first since South Africa's inspirational captain Lindsey Carlisle announced her retirement from international hockey, and it will give the players an opportunity to get used to playing under a new captain.

The Indian and South African teams are to be announced in a few days.
