US vows victory in war against terror

Kabul, June 28 (DPA) US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Wednesday promised victory in the war against terror in Afghanistan, saying the US-led coalition forces would not be deterred by rising attacks by the Taliban.

'We are not going to tire, we are not going to leave. They (Al Qaeda and Taliban) should know we're in this fight until it is victoriously concluded,' said Rice addressing a joint press conference with the Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul.

Rice said the US, Pakistan and Afghanistan had a 'common enemy' in the Taliban and Al Qaeda and stressed the need for coordinating efforts to eliminate the threat.

'Afghanistan has determined enemies, they are ruthless but they will not succeed,' she said adding, 'they are simply not going to win, we will not allow it to happen.'

Both Rice and Karzai described their talks as fruitful.

They held discussions on a joint anti-terror strategy and reviewed the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Karzai said efforts were being made to remove shortcomings and weaknesses in the Afghan army, police, administration and anti-narcotic departments to make them more effective.

Rice praised Karzai for his leadership and said he had achieved tremendous successes.

'I do not know anyone who is more admired and respected in the international community than President Karzai for his strength, for his wisdom and for his courage.'

The US chief diplomat's visit comes in the midst of the deepest security crisis in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001.

The security situation in the country has deteriorated over the past few months with increasing attacks by a resurgent Taliban and the subsequent launch of largest-ever operations against the guerrillas.

More than 1,100 people have been killed in Afghanistan in recent months, among them hundreds of militants loyal to the former Taliban regime and over 30 foreign troops.

Rice arrived in Kabul Wednesday morning from Pakistan where she had Tuesday held talks with President Pervez Musharraf and her Pakistani counterpart Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri.
