Delhi doctor to treat Nepali prime minister

Kathmandu, July 4 (IANS) A leading physician from New Delhi is being flown to assist in the treatment of Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, who was stated to be in stable condition Tuesday, a day after he was admitted with respiratory problems.

Chest specialist J.N. Pandey of the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) arrives in Kathmandu Tuesday to assist in the 84-year-old leader's treatment, Nepal's official media said.

Koirala, who was diagnosed by his personal physician Madhu Ghimire to have developed a slight pneumatic patch in his right lung, used to go to AIIMS regularly almost every year for his health check.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre here Monday evening and advised by doctors to remain there for at least 48 hours.

The hospitalisation forced the veteran leader to take oath of office from his sickbed.

Koirala and his 19 ministers were scheduled to be sworn in last week but the programme was postponed to Tuesday due to the premier's failing health. While the rest of the cabinet members were sworn in as per schedule, Speaker Shubhash Nembang went to the hospital in the morning to administer oath of office to Koirala.

A heavy smoker, Koirala quit smoking earlier this year. Though a tough octogenarian, his health suffered a setback after he collapsed on the streets earlier this year while taking part in a demonstration against King Gyanendra's absolute rule where police baton-charged protesters and fired tear gas shells.
