Leading South African Indian passes away



Johannesburg, July 5 (IANS) Pundit Tulsiram Satyanand, a leading member of the South African Indian community, has passed away after a short illness in Durban. He was 77.

Satyanand, a well-respected Hindu priest and a former teacher, breathed his last Monday after being in the intensive care unit at the Parklands Hospital, Durban, for a week following kidney failure.

According to a report in the Post newspaper, Satyanand, apart from being a religious luminary, was also a top educationist.

He started his teaching career in 1947 at the Westville Primary School and retired as the principal of Reservoir Hills Secondary in 1989, according to the report.

In the course of his distinguished career in education, he had served as the deputy president of the Teachers' Association of South Africa.

He was also on the boards of several organisations in the education, religious and business sectors.

On the religious side, he was a member of the executive committee of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha Priests' Council.

The funeral was held Tuesday. He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.
