Indian to be deported after 36 years of illegal stay

Dubai, July 5 (IANS) An Indian man, who had been staying in Bahrain illegally for 36 years, will now be deported along with his three wives and children.

According to reports, the 59-year-old man had been running a welding workshop without holding a work permit in Isa Town in north central Bahrain.

The man, whose identity has not been revealed, had gone to India eight years back and returned to Bahrain with three wives, the Gulf Daily News newspaper reported. He then opened the workshop.

His case came into the open when he went to the Isa Town police station recently to file a complaint against his landlord. There had been a dispute after the landlord had increased the rent of the building where the Indian and his family were staying.

'When he went to the police station, he was arrested for living in the country without a permit,' deputy public prosecutor Mohammed Mirza Aman told the newspaper.

Aman said that, when questioned, the Indian said he was hoping to get a Bahraini passport.

'The odd thing is that this man knows he is living in the country illegally and went to the police station to report a dispute and being arrested instead,' the report quoted Aman as saying.

There are around 130,000 Indians in Bahrain, many of them working on contracts.
