Taiyuan, July 8 (Xinhua) Eleven people were killed in a landslide early Saturday at a local iron mine in north China's Shanxi province.
The mishap occurred at 5.10 a.m. (local time) in the suburbs of Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province, when an elevated stretch of land slipped and buried a temporary tent in which 12 migrant workers were sleeping.
One worker escaped unhurt and the rest were rushed to the nearest hospital, where they were declared dead, said Liu Wei, who is in charge of the construction of a pump station at the Jianshan iron mine, about 120 km away from Taiyuan.
Liu expressed his grief at the sudden deaths of the migrant workers and offered condolences to relatives of the deceased.
Liu, who works with the Shanxi provincial institute of prospecting and designing, said they had altogether hired 23 migrant workers from China's Henan province for the construction of the pump. He added that the workers had arrived at the site of the construction Thursday.
