Afghanistan to send 120 athletes for SAF Games

Colombo, July 10 (IANS) Afghanistan has said they would send 120 athletes for the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games to be held here next month.

According to Sri Lanka's national Olympic committee chief Hemasiri Fernando, Afghanistan had informed them that there would be an increase of 60 athletes, taking the total contingent strength to 120, reports here quoting him said.

Over 2,500 athletes from eight countries would be taking part in 20 disciplines - the maximum so far -- at different venues in the 10th edition of the games during Aug 18-28.

Fernando said all arrangements had been finalised to house the athletes and officials from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, Afghanistan and, of course, the hosts.

Only the cycling events would take the competitors outside Colombo. They would be held around Viharamahadevi Park in Moratuwa, and from Colombo to Kurunegala and back.

The opening ceremony would be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium Aug 18. The closing ceremony would be held Aug 28.

This is the second time that the SAF Games are being held in Colombo, the first occasion being 1991.

India have traditionally dominated these regional games.
