Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik celebrated his 40th birthday on Monday



The royal - accompanied by his wife Crown Princess Mary and his young children Christian and Isabella - appeared on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace, in Copenhagen, to accept a military salute.

Despite the wet and windy conditions, many well-wishers gathered outside the palace waving Danish flags as they enthusiastically wished the heir to the throne a happy birthday.

Queen Margrethe led the crowd in celebrating her eldest son's special day.

Christian, two, danced and waved on the balcony as the military music played below him, while one-year-old Isabella laughed and smiled in her first appearance at the palace.

The royal family returned to the balcony twice to thank the crowds who had flocked to see the prince.

As the wet conditions worsened, Prince Consort Henrik was forced to remove his glasses.

Prince Frederik is set to celebrate his birthday with a lavish party for 100 of his closest friends on Saturday (31.05.08).
