Gerrard favourite to become full-time English skipper

London, June 9 (ANI): Midfielder Steven Gerrard has emerged the favourite to become full-time captain of English football team.

Sources close to manager Fabio Capello have said that he will make a decision in a fortnight.

And the Italian has indicated that he would prefer a midfielder to take the armband when the World Cup qualifiers kick off in Andorra in September.

Rio Ferdinand and John Terry remain in the frame, but Liverpool ace Gerrard now appears to be the frontrunner, The Sun reported.

A source said: "Fabio is thinking very hard about this decision but likes to see his captains in the middle of the park bossing the game."

"No one has been ruled out but it looks like Gerrard is ahead," the source added.

Capello has used a number of captains with Gerrard, Terry and Ferdinand all taking the armband.

Beckham regained the job in the win over Trinidad and Tobago and Gareth Barry took over when Beckham was substituted. (ANI)
