Controversial photographs of Britain's Queen Elizabeth are to be exhibited to the public

The pictures form part of an exhibition of work by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz to be shown at the National Portrait Gallery.

The BBC came under fire last year when they edited a documentary trailer to make it seem that the monarch had walked out of her photoshoot with Annie.

The footage - which resulted in BBC One controller Peter Fincham losing his job - was actually of the queen walking into the portrait session.

Annie later said she was "amused" by the controversy.

National Portrait Gallery director Sandy Nairne said the pictures of the Queen were "incredibly strong and powerful."

It is the first time they have been shown to the public.

The exhibition - which will open in October - will feature some of Annie's personal photographs as well as celebrity portraits.

They include images of her lover Susan Sontag, who died of cancer in 2004.
